Visitation Ministry

Visitation Ministry

   Elderly Hands

The sick and the lonely, like the poor, are ever with us. This provides for us almost unlimited opportunities to put our Catholic religion into practice.
  • How do we respond to it?

  • Do we ever offer prayer?

  • Do we ever visit our brothers and sisters in Christ?

  • If we don't - we must begin. If we do - we must continue.

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me..... 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' " ... Matthew 25:35,40

The Visitation Ministry of Our Lady of Consolation was organized in March on 1996.  Our Lady of Consolation Parish is comprised of Our Lady of Consolation Church in Nemacolin, St. Mary's Church in Crucible, and Sacred Heart Church in Rices Landing, all in Greene County.

The Ministry meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm in the Activities Building of Sacred Heart Church. The Ministry is comprised of 12 members -- 7 from Our Lady of Consolation and 5 from St. Hugh Church in Carmichaels, sister parish to Our Lady since 2002.

Ministry visits are requested by family, friends, or neighbors by speaking with a ministry member or phoning the Parish Administrative Center located in Carmichaels,   724-966-7270

A two-member team visits the elderly, ill, shut-ins in their own home, hospital or nursing home.  The visits are usually one hour.  Typically, the visit is at 1:00 in the afternoon, although the time is flexible depending on the choice or availability of the persons involved.  Protocol requires that the individual to be visited at home be phoned in order to arrange for a convenient time to visit.

Over the years, visits for non-Catholics have been requested.  The Ministry welcomes these requests as they provide an opportunity to further reach out into the community.  These visits have been received with great appreciation.

The Ministry is self-supporting as each member annually contributes $10 to the treasury, which is used for a mass request for a deceased individual who was visited by the Ministry. Members attend the viewing and offer the mass card and their condolences.  The money is also used for an annual Ministry mass in October.

The annual Visitation Ministry Mass is offered on the first Sunday in October.  The mass is offered for all living and deceased members visit since 1996.  A bulletin insert with all the names of the living and deceased members visited is place in that Sunday's bulletin
